We all want a calm and peaceful feeling when we go on holiday – especially to a serene coastal region like Coffs Coast. So it only makes sense that we would want to furnish our holiday rentals in the way we would want to be treated – right? Well, sometimes it doesn’t turn out the way we thought either because we aren’t creative interior designers or we can’t see past what is already there. But there are some basic points to remember when restyling your holiday home.

1. Bring the Outside Inside
We want to feel as one with nature and the environment, so creating a seamless shift between the outdoors and the indoor living area is essential. This is easily remedied by introducing plants to both the balcony and outdoor patio area and indoor plants that surround the seating areas and doorways. If you don’t have a view, a garden incorporating a water feature or statue will set off the plant life and locally sourced rocks you can use to create that ultimate outdoor setting.

2. Nature’s Palette
The Coffs Coast has a unique, tropical environment combining the best of coastal living along with the tropical flora and fauna that inhabit it. Take inspiration from nature’s beauty and incorporate the dusty tones of the sandy beaches, the lush teals, greens and blues of the ocean, and the inviting yellows and oranges of the flowers. Keeping the walls and ceilings neutral is the key when designing a tranquil paradise, but it doesn’t mean everything has to be white or beige. You can inject life by introducing darker shades of grey or tones of brown. Don’t be afraid of combining textures. Like nature, you can introduce both colour and texture through cushions, throws, rugs, locally sourced or professionally printed beach and wildlife scenes, wall-hangings, plants, accessories, and furniture such as sofa’s and outdoor seating.

3. The Comfy Sofa
One of the main features to a comfy stay (besides the bed) is the sofa or lounge suite. It pays to splash out a little here as you want the optimum experience when it comes to relaxing in the living area. Whether it’s lazing back to watch a movie, read a book, or have titillating conversation with friends and family over a couple of drinks, the heart of the holiday home is the comfy seating zone you create. Avoid leather and vinyl (as they feel cold), ensure seating height is adequate (not too low that it makes it hard to get out of), and make sure to test out any seating furniture before buying.

4. Inject Personality
It’s a great idea to mix it up with both modern pieces which are easier to buy, and older unique, vintage or antique items which you may already have or can purchase from a local second-hand store, that reflect the area or the history of the property. Remember this is about creating a relaxing, holiday feel, not a cluttered boarding house, so keep it to a few unique pieces that will spark interest.
